Efficient Low Threshold Frequency Conversion in AlGaAs-On-Insulator Waveguides

A design study is presented for an efficient, compact and robust device to convert the frequency of single-photons from near-infrared telecom C-band. The material platform aluminum gallium arsenide (AlGaAs)-on-insulator, with its relatively large second-order nonlinearity, used create highly confined optical modes. This can feasibly incorporate single-photon emitters such as indium (InAs) on (GaAs), paving way towards direct integration sources nonlinear waveguides same chip. In this study, single-pass difference-frequency generation (DFG) producing C-band enabled via form birefringent phase-matching between a 930 nm pump continuous wave (CW) idler at 2,325 nm. particular are combined on-chip directional coupler, then tapered single waveguide where three modes phase-matched. studied special case, showing high fabrication tolerances, internal conversion efficiency up 41%.

We present compact crossings for silicon-on-insulator photonic wires. The waveguides are broadened using a 3 microm parabolic taper in each arm. By locally applying a lower index contrast using a double-etch technique, loss of confinement is reduced and 97.5% transmission (-1.7 dB) is achieved with only -40 dB cross talk.
